History

Hita Station opened on 3 March 1934 in Motomachi, Hita City, Ōita Prefecture, when the Kyūdai Line (now the Kyūdai Main Line) was extended from Yoake Station. On 15 November that year it was further extended to Amagase Station, completing the Kyūdai Line. The station building was rebuilt in 1972; freight and parcel handling ended in 1984, and the station was inherited by JR Kyushu at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987. In 2015 the station building was renovated using Hita cedar, in a design by Eiji Mitooka. Beginning with the July 2017 Northern Kyushu heavy rain, and again in 2020 and 2021, the Kyūdai Main Line was damaged, undergoing repeated long-term suspension and restoration. On 28 August 2023 BRT Hikoboshi Line service began, with a boarding platform set up in front of the station.

Notes

As a regional promotion project tied to Attack on Titan, the signature work of Hita-born manga artist Hajime Isayama, a bronze statue of "Captain Levi" was installed in the plaza in front of the station, with an unveiling ceremony held on 6 March 2021.
