History

Hishiro Station was established by the Railway Board as a general station on 25 October 1916. Small-lot freight handling ended on 20 February 1963, when the station became passenger-only, and its station building was relocated on 1 June 1965 with the installation of passing facilities. Parcel handling ended and the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1984. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Owing to Typhoon No. 18 in September 2017, services between Unoshima and Kagoshima-Chūō were suspended for the whole day; operation resumed between Usuki and Saiki on 18 December. It is a ground-level station with two opposed platforms and two tracks, and limited express "Nichirin" trains also pass each other here.
