History
Hirota Station opened as a general station on 15 July 1899, simultaneously with the opening of the Ganetsu Railway's section between Yamagata (now Jōko) and Aizuwakamatsu stations, and became a government railway station with the nationalization of the Ganetsu Railway on 1 November 1906. It is located at Nakajima-bo, Hirota, Kawahigashi-machi, Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, and is now a station on the Ban'etsu West Line served by both JR East and JR Freight. Wagonload freight handling, excluding traffic to and from dedicated sidings, ended on 1 August 1982, and parcel handling ended on 10 March 1983; the station became a JR East and JR Freight station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. In December 2007 the old wooden station building was half-destroyed by fire, and a new station building in Japanese style was completed and put into use on 22 June 2008.
Notes
The old wooden station building was half-destroyed by a fire in December 2007, and the new single-story steel-frame building, built in June 2008 at a cost of about 30 million yen, has a Japanese-style exterior characteristic of Aizu, with many windows to allow visibility from the surroundings and reduce blind spots at the unstaffed station.
