Location

History

Hiragishi Station opened on 10 November 1913 as a general station of the national railway; it is a station on the Nemuro Main Line located in Hiragishi-Nakamachi, Akabira City, Hokkaido. Aerial ropeways and loading tracks running to a powerhouse behind the station from the Toyota Coal Mine and the Ōyasawa Coal Mine (formerly the Ōya Coal Mine) on the opposite bank of the Sorachi River were built in succession in 1922 and 1930; when both mines closed in 1943 under the wartime Small and Medium Coal Mine Consolidation Order, their dedicated lines were converted for use by the military-supply plants of Hokkaido Carbon Industry and Nippon Yuka Kōgyō. After the war, from 1952 to 1963, the Hokuryō Sangyō Hiragishi Coal Mine, part of the Mitsubishi Mining group, kept loading facilities behind the station. Freight handling ended in February 1976, and the station became unstaffed at the same time parcel handling ended in May 1982; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways.

Notes

The station's name derives from the Ainu "pira-kes" ("the end of a cliff"), an etymology shared with the identically named Hiragishi Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway's Namboku Line.
