History

Higashi-Shinkawa Station opened on 1 August 1923 with the extension of the Ube Railway from Tokonami to Ube-Shinkawa, in what is now Higashi-Shinkawa-chō, Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Ube Railway was nationalised on 1 May 1943, becoming the Ube Higashi Line, which was renamed the Ube Line on 1 February 1948. Freight handling ended in 1971, the station building was rebuilt on 5 April 1979, and parcel handling ended in 1984. JR West took over at the 1987 privatisation. On 1 April 2002 the station passed from contracted operation by JR West's Hiroshima maintenance subsidiary to a simplified contract under which Ube City's Silver Human Resources Centre supplied staff on weekdays only, and it was destaffed entirely in September 2012. A second station building on the east side, the "Tennis-Court Exit", opened on 1 October 2011, giving direct access to the adjoining Chūō Park.

Notes

The east "Tennis-Court Exit" was opened on 1 October 2011 to give residents on the east side direct access to the station and to Chūō Park, which hosted the soft-tennis events of the 66th National Sports Festival.
