History

Higashi-Okazaki Station opened on 8 August 1923 on the privately held Aichi Electric Railway, sharing a site with the Zejiji stop on the Okazaki Electric Tram. Aichi Electric was absorbed by Meitetsu on 1 August 1935, and the tram interchange ended when the Okazaki city tram line was withdrawn on 17 June 1962. The original timber station building was replaced by a station building block in 1958, and freight handling ended on 30 September 1982. An underground concourse, north-south passageway and automatic ticket gates were completed on 25 December 1989, and a partial bridge-style station building with lifts came into use on 24 December 2010. Tranpass arrived on 15 September 2004 and manaca on 11 February 2011, and on 15 November 2021 Meitetsu and Okazaki City signed a basic agreement on redeveloping the station building and its commercial block, under which the station is to be converted entirely to a bridge-style layout.

Notes

Locals call the station and the district around it "Higaoka". It is Meitetsu's fourth-busiest station, after Meitetsu Nagoya, Kanayama and Sakaemachi, and the busiest of the operator's stations outside the city of Nagoya as well as the busiest that connects to no other railway: despite the JR Central station a little away carrying the city's name, Higashi-Okazaki is Okazaki's central station, sitting closer to the city hall and Okazaki Castle.
