History

Higashi-Narawa Station opened as a passenger station between Handa and Taketoyo on 7 December 1933, more than 40 years after the Taketoyo Line opened in 1886. It was newly established to coincide with the introduction of railcar services and increased train frequency, measures taken to counter the Chita Railway (present-day Meitetsu Kōwa Line), which had opened in the early 1930s, and restrictions were initially placed on the sections for which passenger traffic could be handled. The station building was relocated about 700 meters toward Taketoyo in 1944, and freight handling began in May of the following year, 1945. The Kinuura Rinkai Railway's Handa Line opened in November 1975, freight handling switched to that company's jurisdiction, and this station became unstaffed. It passed to JR Central at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and the "TOICA" IC card became usable in November 2006.

Notes

Freight trains running through between the Taketoyo Line and the Handa Line perform a switchback, changing locomotives on a runaround track south of platform 2, so that track has been left non-electrified even after the Taketoyo Line's electrification.
