History
Higashi-Muroran Station is a general-service station that opened on 1 August 1892 as the Hokkaido Colliery Railway's Muroran Station, near the site of today's Wanishi Station. On 1 July 1897 it was renamed Wanishi Station (first generation) when the present-day Muroran Station opened. It was transferred to the government railway upon railway nationalization on 1 October 1906. On 6 November 1920 it was relocated to Itanki as the Wanishi Ironworks expanded, and on 10 September 1928, when the Osawa Line was fully opened, it was renamed Higashi-Wanishi Station. It was renamed Higashi-Muroran Station on 1 September 1931. It was rebuilt with an overhead (bridge-type) station building on 26 December 1969, and JR Hokkaido and JR Freight took it over at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.
Notes
The station has changed name three times — it opened as Muroran in 1892, became Wanishi in 1897, Higashi-Wanishi in 1928 and Higashi-Muroran in 1931 — and it moved twice as well: to Itanki in 1920, when the expansion of the Wanishi steelworks forced the line to be realigned, and to its present site in 1928.
