History

Higashi-Kitazawa Station opened on 1 April 1927 on the Odakyū Odawara Line, handling both passenger and freight traffic until freight was discontinued in 1966. Quadruple-tracking between Yoyogi-Uehara and the station was completed on 31 March 1978. On 1 October 2005 the express tracks were taken out of service to enable continuous grade-separation works through Setagaya ward, and the station moved underground on 23 March 2013. A new at-grade station building entered service on 16 May 2015 and was completed on 26 November 2016. The quadruple-tracking project was completed on 3 March 2018, when the express bypass tracks and the permanent platform on the local tracks came into use, and Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line through-services began calling at the station on 17 March 2018.

Notes

The station's name comes from its 1927 location on the eastern edge of the former Shimo-Kitazawa area of Setagaya-machi in Ebara County, meaning "east of Kitazawa."
