History

Higashi-Biwajima Station, operated by Meitetsu, is located in Nishi-ku, Nagoya. It opened on 6 May 1910 as a stop on the Biwajima Line, and was relocated to its present site on 12 August 1941 with the opening of the connecting east–west line. The station was formerly staffed only on weekday mornings, from 7:30 to 9:30; a central management system was introduced on 1 December 2009, leaving it unstaffed all day at weekends and on public holidays, and from 16 July 2016 it has been unstaffed at all times. A barrier-free upgrade was completed in April 2009 and a new station building opened in 2016.

Notes

Interchange between the Nagoya Main Line and the Inuyama Line is not possible at Biwajima Junction itself, where the two lines divide, so Higashi-Biwajima is the closest station to the junction at which to change. Because only local trains call there, Meitetsu allows passengers changing between the Inuyama Line and the Gifu direction of the Nagoya Main Line to ride on to Sakō or Meitetsu Nagoya and change there instead, with the duplicated section between Biwajima Junction and Meitetsu Nagoya left out of the fare calculation.
