History

Higashi-Ainonai Station opened on 18 November 1912 as a general station, initially named Ainonai Station (the first of that name), when the Railway Board's Yubetsu Light Railway Line opened between Notsukeushi Station (present-day Kitami Station) and Rubeshibe Station. The line it belonged to changed successively: the Rubeshibe Light Railway Line (1914), the Yubetsu Light Railway Line (1916), the Yubetsu Line (1922), and the Sekihoku Line (separated off and incorporated in 1922), before being reorganized into the Sekihoku Main Line in 1961. On 5 February 1934, when neighbouring Kami-Ainonai Station to the west was renamed Ainonai Station (the second of that name), this station became Higashi-Ainonai Station, then written 東相ノ内駅. Parcel handling ended and the station was placed under simplified consignment in 1984, freight handling ended in 1985, JR Hokkaido took over at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways, and the station became fully unstaffed in 1992. On 1 April 1997 the written form of the name was simplified by dropping the katakana ノ, 東相ノ内 becoming the present 東相内, with no change to the reading Higashi-Ainonai.

Notes

The station was originally named Ainonai Station (the first of that name), but when the neighbouring station to the west was renamed Ainonai Station (the second of that name), this station had the prefix "Higashi" ("east") added. The katakana ノ was later dropped from the spelling as well, 東相ノ内 becoming the present 東相内, though the name is still read Higashi-Ainonai.
