History
Higashi-Abiko Station opened on 12 October 1950 as a passenger stop on the Japan National Railways Narita Line in the city of Abiko, Chiba. Until Tennōdai opened nearby, it served as the only railway station for the Sageto and Okahatsudo districts. Crossing-loop construction began in September 1967 and entered service on 28 March 1968. With the opening of Tennōdai around 1971 the station was destaffed, and electrification of the Abiko–Narita section in October 1973 brought a north exit. Privatisation transferred the station to JR East on 1 April 1987, and Suica IC-card service began on 18 November 2001. The station now has two side platforms whose surface sits slightly below the floor level of modern rolling stock, linked by an interior crossing near the Abiko end.
Notes
A station-name sign installed on the south side in March 2018 carries a golf motif: the dot of the character 我 in Abiko is drawn as a golf ball, a nod to the neighbouring Abiko Golf Club, for which the station is the closest stop.
