History

Hegawa Station opened on 1 July 1942 as a station on the state-owned railways' Mugi Line. It was not included in the original plan and is said to have been added because of strong petitioning from local residents; although it lies in the Tachibana settlement, the Mugi Line already had an Awa-Tachibana Station, so the name of the neighboring Hegawa area was adopted for the station instead. Freight handling was discontinued in March 1959 and parcel handling in April 1970, with the station becoming unstaffed at the same time as the latter. It became a station of JR Shikoku with the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways in April 1987. It is a ground-level station with a single side platform serving one track, located at Ōaza Tachibana, Mugi, Kaifu District, Tokushima Prefecture; there is no station building, but a block-built waiting shelter stands on the platform, and the platform describes a sharp curve.

Notes

At its 1942 opening the station was staffed, but ridership declined as the surrounding area depopulated, and after it was unstaffed in 1970 a station building that had become virtually derelict remained standing for a long time through the Japanese National Railways era.
