History

Hatsukaichi Station opened on 25 September 1897 with the San'yō Railway's extension between Hiroshima and Tokuyama, handling passengers and freight in what is now Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. The line was nationalised in 1906 and became part of the San'yō Main Line in 1909. The station building was rebuilt in 1964, wagonload freight ended in 1980 and parcels in 1986, and JR West took over at the 1987 privatisation. ICOCA-compatible automatic ticket gates were installed in June 2007 and station operations were contracted out from 2008. Rebuilding work begun in 2014 brought a new bridge station building into use on 3 October 2015, together with LED departure indicators at the ticket gate and on both platforms and a convenience store; the Midori no Madoguchi closed in April 2022 and was replaced by a Midori no Kenbaiki Plus ticket machine.

Notes

Although Hatsukaichi is the city's nominal main station, neighbouring Miyauchi-Kushido Station actually handles more daily passengers.
