History
Hatabu Station opened on 27 May 1901 in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, when the San'yō Railway extended its trunk line from Asa to Bakan (today's Shimonoseki). Nationalised in 1906, the route took the San'yō Main Line name in 1909. The privately operated Chōshū Railway began operating at the station on 22 April 1914; it was nationalised in 1925 as the Ogushi Line, later folded into the San'in Main Line in 1933. A rerouting of the San'yō Main Line moved the station to its current site on 19 November 1928. JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 transferred operations to JR West, and the station became unstaffed in September 2025.
Notes
Hatabu is the nominal western terminus of the San'in Main Line, 673.8 km from that line's opposing terminus, yet every San'in Main Line train continues another 3.5 km to terminate at Shimonoseki Station instead.
