History

Hasumachi (Baba-Kinen-Kōen-mae) Station is on the Toyama Chihō Railway Toyama-kō Line in Hasumachi 1-chōme, Toyama, with station number C35. It opened on 23 July 1924 as Kōtōgakkō-mae Station of the Fugan Railway. The line was transferred to Toyama Electric Railway on 1 December 1941, and that company was renamed Toyama Chihō Railway on 1 January 1943; the line was then nationalised on 1 June 1943 and the station was renamed Hasumachi. In its conventional-railway days it was the only staffed station on the Toyama-kō Line apart from the seasonal Keirinjō-mae stop, and it was the focus of the 2001 unstaffing controversy. It came under JR West on 1 April 1987, was withdrawn from JR West on 1 March 2006, reopened as Toyama Light Rail on 29 April 2006, reverted to Toyama Chihō Railway on 22 February 2020, and was renamed to its present form on 21 March 2020.

Notes

In its conventional-railway days Hasumachi was the only staffed station on the Toyama-kō Line (excluding the seasonal Keirinjō-mae). When JR West announced on 15 November 2000 that the station would be unstaffed from the March 2001 timetable revision, citing falling passenger numbers, local opposition cited the role of public transport in an ageing society and the station's use by high-school students on their way to school, but the unstaffing went ahead on 3 March 2001.
