History

Hashikura Station opened on 28 April 1929 when the then Sanyo Line was extended south from Sanuki-Saida to Tsukuda Signal Station (now Tsukuda Station), linking the route to the existing Tokushima Line and providing service to Awa-Ikeda. The line is now the Dosan Line; the station became unstaffed on 1 October 1970, when handling of personal baggage was abolished and small-parcel handling was cut back to arriving parcels of specially-handled newspapers only. JR Shikoku succeeded Japanese National Railways at the privatisation of 1 April 1987. The station consists of two opposed side platforms: track 1, on the station-building side, is the up/down auxiliary line and track 2 the up/down main line, limited to 100 km/h, and limited express trains cross here. The substantial station building survives, although its toilets have been closed.

Notes

The station is named for nearby Hashikura-ji Temple at the summit of Mount Hashikura; an earlier funicular built to serve pilgrims opened in 1930 but was scrapped during the war in 1944, and a ropeway replacement followed in 1971.
