History
Namiko Station opened on 1 September 1921, when the Railway Ministry's San'in Main Line was extended between Tsunozu and Hamada, and began handling passengers and freight. Freight handling ended on 15 June 1973 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station was briefly unstaffed from 14 March 1985. It was restaffed when JR West took over at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, then unstaffed again in March 1990; in April 2000 it was simultaneously placed under simplified-consignment operation and made a limited-express stop, coinciding with the opening of the Shimane Marine Park Aquas. Simplified consignment ended on 31 March 2022, leaving the station unstaffed all day. The station is an at-grade station with a single island platform serving two tracks, allowing trains to pass each other, with a wooden station building on the seaward side.
Notes
In 2024, the craft brewery Iwami Bakushu relocated its brewery into the station building, making the station facility an example of station space being used as a manufacturing base for a local brand.
