History

Hanataguchi Station (HN21) is a Hankai Tramway Hankai Line tram stop in Sakai-ku, Sakai. Originally the stop stood one street south of its present position, at the intersection with the old Nagao-kaidō; its name comes from that road, which within the built-up part of Sakai was known as Hanataguchi-suji because it led out toward the Hanada district. When the road that is now the Sakai-Yamatoji route was cut through and widened in the post-war period, the stop was relocated to its current position. Eleven years after the stop opened, the 1922 urbanisation of the old Nagao-kaidō frontage east of the Doi River (since filled in) created a new district called Hanataguchi-chō, and 'Hanataguchi' in everyday Sakai usage now usually refers to that area rather than to the stop.

Notes

Hanadaguchi's name predates the Sakai district called Hanadaguchi-chō by eleven years: the stop opened in 1911 and takes its name from the road that central Sakai knew as Hanadaguchi-suji because it led out toward Hanada (now Kita-hanada-chō and Minami-hanada-chō in Kita-ku), while the more familiar Sakai neighbourhood of the same name was only created in 1922.
