History

Hamanaka Station opened on 25 November 1919 with the Railway Board's Kushiro Main Line (now the Nemuro Main Line) extension between Akkeshi and Attoko stations. The station building was rebuilt on 18 August 1936; freight handling ended in October 1974 and parcel handling in February 1984. The station became unstaffed and was placed under simplified consignment on 1 November 1986, and JR Hokkaido took it over at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. The current station building, which also houses a tourist information office and a products display room, opened newly built on 27 December 1989, and simplified consignment was abolished on 1 November 2008, leaving the station fully unstaffed. As of 1983 it was a passing station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks, but it is now a ground-level station with a single platform on one track plus only a spur siding remaining, an unstaffed station managed by Akkeshi Station.

Notes

Hamanaka, the town in which the station is located, is the birthplace of Monkey Punch, the manga artist known for "Lupin III" and other works, and life-size panels related to Lupin III are displayed at the station.
