History

Gyōdashi Station opened on 1 April 1921 as Gyōda Station when the Hokubu Railway's line between Hanyū and this station came into service. The line to Kumagaya opened the following year, 1922, and in that same year the Hokubu Railway merged into the Chichibu Railway, making it a station on the Chichibu Railway Chichibu Main Line. On 1 June 1966 it was renamed Gyōdashi Station when a Gyōda Station opened on the Japanese National Railways Takasaki Line. An overpass was completed in 1980, converting it into an elevated station building with access from both sides, and the north exit came into use. It was unstaffed on 12 March 2022 with the introduction of the PASMO IC card. Though it serves as the city's principal station and is the closest station to Gyōda City Hall, it lies somewhat apart from the city center.

Notes

From after the Pacific War through the late 1960s, boosted by the prosperity of the local tabi (split-toe sock) industry, the station had the second-highest ridership on the Chichibu Railway after Kumagaya Station, with an average of 3,620 boardings per day in fiscal 1965, but by the 2010s this had fallen to about a quarter of that figure.
