History
Gōtsu Station, in Gōtsu-chō, Gōtsu, Shimane Prefecture, opened on 25 December 1920 as Iwami-Gōtsu Station when the Railway Ministry's Sanin Main Line was extended between Asari and Tsunozu. It carried the "Iwami" provincial name because the Hokuriku Main Line already had an identically pronounced Gōtsu Station, written with different characters, but it was renamed "Gōtsu Station" when that other station was abolished in June 1970. From 1930 until 2018 the Sankō Line originated at this station. It became a station of JR West and JR Freight at the division and privatization of JNR in April 1987, and freight handling ended in 2006. It is scheduled to be unstaffed in April 2026. It is a ground-level station with one side platform serving one track and one island platform serving two tracks — three tracks and two platforms in total.
