History
Gion-Shijō Station serves the Keihan Main Line in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, on the east bank of the Kamo River at the Shijō-ōhashi bridge. It opened on 27 October 1915 as Shijō Station with both platforms on the north side of Shijō Street; the up platform was later shifted to the south side, giving a staggered layout, while the station building always stood beside the downbound platform, which itself moved south of Shijō Street in 1982 as undergrounding work advanced. The Kamo River flood of 1935 badly damaged the station, and the plan drawn up afterwards to bury the line and widen the river was cut back in wartime, riverbed works continuing until 1947. Undergrounding was finally fixed in the city plan of October 1975; the line was buried on 24 May 1987 and the surface trackbed gave way to Kawabata-dōri the following year. The station was renamed Gion-Shijō on 19 October 2008, the day the Nakanoshima Line opened, to distinguish it from the Karasuma subway's Shijō Station.
Notes
The Keihan tracks along the Kamo River were flooded twice at Shijō: the Kamo River disaster of June 1935 damaged the station building and platforms, and on 15 July 1987, less than two months after the line went underground, a torrential downpour sent water from the Shirakawa stream just north of the station into the new tunnel, closing the station for the whole day and turning trains back at Shichijō.
