History
Gejō Station opened on 25 November 1927, when the Tōkamachi Line (later the Iiyama Line) was extended between Echigo-Iwasawa and Tōkamachi. It became part of the Iiyama Line when the line was renamed in June 1944, and became a station with contracted operations after freight handling ended in December 1970. Parcel handling also ended in November 1982, at which point it became an unstaffed station with simplified contracted staffing; it was transferred to JR East at the division and privatization of JNR in April 1987. The present station building dates from January 1997. The station formerly had two opposed platforms serving two tracks, but one platform and its track have since been removed, leaving an unstaffed station with a single platform serving one track.
Notes
The present station building was completed in January 1997; traces of the station's earlier layout, with two opposed platforms serving two tracks, remain visible in the remnant of the platform on the east side.
