History

Geibikei Station originated as a temporary-train stopping point called "Geibikei Kari-eki" (Geibikei Temporary Station), set up about 20 metres from the present station building, across the tracks, to coincide with the opening of the Ōfunato Line between Ichinoseki and Surisawa on 26 July 1925. It had no platform, being merely boards laid across posts. It formally opened as a petition station in the last timetable revision of the Japanese National Railways era, on 1 November 1986, and became a JR East station at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987. It is a ground-level station on an embankment with a single side platform serving one track, an unstaffed station managed by Ichinoseki Station, and serves as the gateway for sightseeing at Geibikei Gorge.

Notes

Geibikei began life in 1925 as a makeshift stop of planks laid across stakes, put up across the tracks from the present building and served only by the special trains run for the opening of the Ōfunato Line's Ichinoseki–Surisawa section; it was not promoted to a permanent passenger station until 1 November 1986, in the final JNR timetable revision before privatisation.
