History

Furusan began on 25 September 1943 as the Furusan Signal Box on the Japanese Government Railways Muroran Main Line between Mikawa and Yuni, set up to handle wartime traffic. It was promoted to the full general station Furusan on 1 April 1946, with a waiting room added at the same time. Car-load freight handling started on 1 December 1947 but was withdrawn on 15 March 1972; parcel handling and staffing ended on 15 May 1980, and the building was rebuilt in 1982 to a standard plan shared with Abira, Mikawa and Kurioka. JR Hokkaido took over at privatisation on 1 April 1987.

Notes

The station name comes from the Ainu "hur-sam" — "beside the hill" — which is said to be the Ainu name of the nearby tributary of the Yuni River that gave the locality its name.
