History
Furudate Station is a Tōhoku Main Line stop in the town of Shiwa, Iwate Prefecture, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It opened on 11 October 1944 as a signal stop, Furudate shingōjō, and was upgraded to a full station on 1 March 1949, taking the name Furudate Station. The station passed to JR East when Japanese National Railways was privatized on 1 April 1987. It is a ground-level station with two opposed side platforms linked by a footbridge, its building set beneath the elevated Tōhoku Shinkansen viaduct, though shinkansen trains do not call there. Suica became usable on 27 May 2023, and the station has been fully unstaffed since 16 March 2024.
Notes
The station's 1949 name was written 古舘駅, using a variant form of the kanji (舘) rather than the 館 used in its present-day name, Furudate Station.
