History

Funato Station opened on 4 December 1910, when Tosa Electric Railway extended the future Gomen Line from Kako to Ōtsu, a terminus that has since been abolished. On 1 October 2014 the stop passed to Tosaden Kōtsū, formed by the merger of Tosa Electric Railway with Kōchi-ken Kōtsū and Tosaden Dream Service. Two side platforms straddle the north–south tracks: the Harimayabashi-bound platform on the east borrows a shop frontage alongside the tracks as its safety island, while the Gomenmachi-bound platform to the west is marked only by a white line painted on the parallel road.

Notes

Funato is identified in the 10th-century Tosa Diary (土佐日記) of Ki no Tsurayuki as the place where the diarist boarded his boat for the journey back to the capital — a sign at the foot of the steps up to the Route 195 Funato Bridge marks the location.
