History

Fukuwatari Station was established on 21 December 1898, together with the opening of the Chūgoku Railway's main line (present-day Tsuyama Line). The Chūgoku Railway's railway division was nationalized on 1 June 1944, making the station part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications's (later Japanese National Railways') Tsuyama Line. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1971 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station became one of West Japan Railway Company (JR West) at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. It was unstaffed on 1 June 2011. The wooden station building is said, according to the Fukuwatari neighborhood association and the building's asset plate, to have been built in 1909, but due to deterioration its entrance was sealed off on 2 October 2025, and it is scheduled to be replaced by a simplified waiting area through construction completed by June 2026.

Notes

Fukuwatari is the only intermediate station on the Tsuyama Line at which the main line is divided into separate up and down tracks: platform 1 is the up main track, platform 2 the down main track, and platform 3 a subsidiary main track used in both directions, which also allows trains to turn back toward Okayama.
