History
Fukuoka Station opened on 1 November 1898 as a general station at Shimomino in Fukuoka Town, Nishi-Tonami District, with the government railway's Hokuriku Line extension from Kanazawa to Takaoka. The line-naming order of 12 October 1909 made it a Hokuriku Main Line station. A triangular-roofed station building housing a tourist information office, products hall, branch library and other municipal facilities was completed on 13 April 2000 for 450 million yen. On 14 March 2015 the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Kanazawa and the station passed from JR West to the Ainokaze Toyama Railway; ICOCA use began on 26 March. Two platform lifts opened on 20 March 2025. Now in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, it is on a hundred-selected-stations list for Chubu (中部の駅百選).
Notes
Its name comes from the former Fukuoka Town in Nishi-Tonami District and has nothing to do with Fukuoka City in Fukuoka Prefecture; since the 2015 transfer to the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, no station in the JR Group is called simply Fukuoka, setting aside names that add a wider region or a compass direction.
