History

Fukuno Station opened on 4 May 1897 as the terminus of the Chūetsu Railway's extension from a temporary station at Kuroda, becoming a through station on 18 August the same year when the line was pushed on to Fukumitsu. The Chūetsu Railway was nationalised in 1920 and absorbed into the state-run Chūetsu Line, whose Takaoka–Jōhana section was redesignated the Jōhana Line in 1942. From 1915 until 1972 the station was also served by the privately operated line that became the Kaetsunō Railway's Kaetsu Line, whose former station site now forms part of an industrial plant. Freight handling ceased in 1980 and parcel handling in 1985, and the station passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways.

Notes

The wooden station building, in use since 1897, is the oldest surviving station structure in Toyama Prefecture; the calligraphic nameboard that once hung at its entrance, installed around 1970, was removed during renovation work in 2015 and taken to Kanazawa as waste before being rescued and re-installed on the platform under an acrylic cover.
