History

Fukumitsu Station opened on 18 August 1897 as the terminus of the Chūetsu Railway extension from Fukuno and became a through station on 31 October that year when the line was completed to Jōhana. The Chūetsu Railway was nationalised on 1 September 1920 and the route renamed the Jōhana Line in August 1942. Between 1939 and the 1980s the station also served as a Japanese National Railways bus terminal for the Kinpuku (renamed Kinpakuhoku in 1953), Tamiyama and Inami feeder lines, with the station premises progressively expanded through the 1950s. Freight was withdrawn on 25 September 1980 and parcels on 14 March 1985, and the station passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation. The current lodge-style steel-frame station building was completed in April 1983, and on 6 August 2021 the station footbridge was converted into a public free passageway as a Nanto city road, opening an east entrance.

Notes

Nanto, formed in 2004 by the merger of eight municipalities, ran a split-office system with the mayor's office in the Fukuno branch, so JTB's printed timetable listed Fukuno Station as the city's representative station. The listing stayed unchanged even after the city hall was consolidated into the Fukumitsu branch on 1 July 2020, and only after the Toyama Shimbun pointed this out did the JTB timetable name Fukumitsu Station as Nanto's representative station, from the December 2021 issue.
