History

Fukui Station is the representative station of Fukui City and Fukui Prefecture, served by JR West, Hapi-Line Fukui and Echizen Railway, with Fukui Railway's Fukubu Line calling at the adjoining Fukui-eki tram stop. The JR West Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Hapi-Line Fukui Line (formerly JR West's Hokuriku Main Line) and Echizen Railway's Katsuyama Eiheiji Line, whose starting point this is, each have their own elevated platforms here; JR West Etsumi-Hoku Line (Kuzuryū Line) trains, which branch off at neighbouring Echizen-Hanandō, run through to the Hapi-Line Fukui platforms, and Echizen Railway's Mikuni Awara Line trains, which branch off at Fukuiguchi, run through to the Echizen Railway platforms, so five lines are effectively available. The station opened on 15 July 1896 as the terminus of the government railway's Hokuriku Line from Tsuruga, became a through station in 1897 when the line was extended to Komatsu, had its building burned down in the 1945 Fukui air raid and half-destroyed by the 1948 Fukui earthquake, and passed to JR West at the 1987 privatisation.

Notes

Fukui Station's predecessor buildings were hit by disaster three times in seven years: the building burned down in the Fukui air raid of 19 July 1945, was half-destroyed by the Fukui earthquake of 28 June 1948, and burned down again on the night of 2 July 1951, when a fire that broke out in the waiting-room attic at about 10:40 pm gutted every part of the building except the stationmaster's office.
