History
Fukaura Station opened on 13 December 1934 as a station on the Gonō Line, serving the port town of Fukaura in Aomori Prefecture. The station has long been the operational pivot of the line: local services are divided here, and every "Resort Shirakami" sightseeing rapid calls at the station. Freight handling ended on 20 September 1980 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Station duties were consigned out on 1 April 2019, when the Fukaura stationmaster's post was abolished and the station was placed under Goshogawara's management; the Midori no Madoguchi window closed on 15 March 2024 and the station became unstaffed the following day.
Notes
The original station building burned down in the early morning of 1 April 1963 when a fire at a nearby sawmill spread under high winds, destroying eight station-related structures before the current building was rebuilt the following March.
