History

Fujishima Station opened on 21 September 1918 as a station on the Rikuu West Line in what is now Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. It was reassigned to the Uetsu Main Line on 31 July 1924. A station-front shop opened on 10 April 1925, and a footbridge was completed in January 1934. Freight handling ended on 1 September 1972; the station became contract-managed on 1 April 1981 and a staff-less simple consignment on 14 March 1985. It transferred to JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. From April 2016 the station building was rebuilt on the same footprint after operating from a temporary prefab beside it; the replacement entered service on 15 October 2016.
