History

Fujisaki Station opened on 25 September 1918 as a station of the Mutsu Railway, and was absorbed into the Japanese National Railways' Goshogawara Line (later the Gonō Line) when the Mutsu Railway was nationalised on 1 June 1927. Freight handling was discontinued in 1983, and with the introduction of electronic blocking on 1 November 1986 between Itayanagi and Kawabe, the station lost its train-operation duties, was left without assigned staff and was run under a kan'i itaku (simplified consignment) contract. With privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. The kan'i itaku arrangement ended in 2001 and the station became fully unstaffed. The town and JR East's Akita Branch Office rebuilt the station building in November 2013; the completed building was dedicated on 1 December, when the seasonal rapid "Resort Shirakami" made a special one-day stop. From 17 March 2018 the Resort Shirakami became a regular calling train. Eki-net Q-Chiket service began on 1 October 2024.

Notes

The platform still carries the phrase "yubisashi kakunin" (point-and-call confirmation), a relic from the days when train-operation duties were carried out at the station. From 15 June 2018 the station has played the omotenashi ("hospitality") melody "Ringo no Hitorigoto" ("The Apple's Soliloquy").
