History

The station opened on 21 December 1902 as Ōi Station with the government railway's Tajimi - Nakatsugawa extension. It became part of the Chūō West Line in 1909 and was absorbed into the Chūō Main Line in 1911. The Akechi Line began operations from here on 24 May 1933. The station was renamed Ena on 1 November 1963, following the 1954 municipal merger that created Ena city. Carload freight ended in 1981, and the JNR-era Akechi Line was converted to the third-sector Akechi Railway on 16 November 1985. The station became part of JR Central on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates were installed in 1995 and TOICA service began on 25 November 2006.

Notes

Two other railways once served the station and its forecourt: the Iwamura Electric Tramway, which reached the station forecourt in 1906 and closed in 1935, and the Kita-Ena Railway's Ōi Line, which reached the station in 1928 and closed in 1934. Today the station is shared only by JR Central and the Akechi Railway.
