History
Echizen-Shimoyama Station is a station of the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) Etsumi-Hoku Line (Kuzuryū Line), located at Shimoyama, Ōno, Fukui Prefecture. It was established on 15 December 1972 as a passenger-only station when the Japanese National Railways Etsumi-Hoku Line was extended between Kadohara Station and Kuzuryūko Station. It became a JR West station with the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Heavy rain on 18 July 2004 suspended the entire Etsumi-Hoku Line, but service resumed between Echizen-Ōno and Kuzuryūko stations on the 20th of that same month. It is a ground-level station (halt) with a single side platform serving one track on the right-hand side facing towards Kuzuryūko, equipped from opening with only a simple platform and waiting shelter. It is an unstaffed station managed by the Kanazawa Branch Office with no facilities such as automatic ticket machines, and because the platform sits higher than the surrounding road, one must climb a slope to enter it.
Notes
Because the platform lies on an uphill grade toward Kuzuryūko Station, Kuzuryūko-bound trains may pass through without stopping in snowy conditions; since Fukui-bound trains do stop at the station, boarding a train that will turn back is exceptionally permitted there.
