History

Echizen-Handō Station opened on 15 December 1960 as a passenger station of Japanese National Railways when the Etsumi-Hoku Line came into service as far as Kadohara Station; it is located at Handō-naka 1-chōme, Fukui, Fukui Prefecture. Platforms for the Hokuriku Main Line were added in the "Yon-San-Tō" timetable revision of 1 October 1968, the station became unstaffed in 1984, and after the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways it became the starting station of JR West's Etsumi-Hoku Line. With the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Kanazawa and Tsuruga on 16 March 2024, the Hokuriku Main Line was separated from JR West's operations and transferred to Hapi Line Fukui. The station is now jointly used by the Hapi Line Fukui line and JR West's Kuzuryū Line.
