History

Echigo-Shimoseki Station opened on 10 August 1931 with the opening of the Yonesaka West Line between Sakamachi and this station. It became a contracted-service station on 28 February 1983 with the introduction of CTC, and passed to JR East in the National Railways' privatization and division on 1 April 1987. From 1 April 1995 it was operated under simplified contract by Sekikawa Village, and on 3 August 2022 the sections on either side of the station were closed by heavy-rain damage, suspending train departures and arrivals. On 1 January 2023 Sekikawa Village's contract to sell tickets was terminated, leaving the station unstaffed at all hours.

Notes

Along the former Yonezawa Kaidō highway, which runs east–west in front of the station, a townscape of preserved mansions and gardens once belonging to wealthy farmers and merchants continues, forming the center of Sekikawa Village.
