History

Chiyokawa Station opened on 20 July 1935, newly established along with Namikawa Station on the Railway Ministry's Sanin Main Line between Kameoka and Yagi; it initially handled only passengers traveling between Kyoto and Fukuchiyama and to and from Osaka. Checked-baggage and parcel handling began on 15 October 1949, and the restriction on the passenger service area was lifted. A passing loop came into use in 1961, and parcel handling ended in 1971. It became a JR West station at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, and the "Sagano Line" nickname came into use the following year, on 13 March 1988. Automatic ticket gates were introduced in December 1998 and ICOCA in November 2003. With the doubling of track between Namikawa and Yagi in September 2009, the passing loop was abolished and the station became a stop without crossing facilities. The east entrance was made barrier-free with a new station building opening in February 2021, and the west entrance's ticket window closed in late October 2024, leaving the station unstaffed all day. Its station number is JR-E13.

Notes

In the Umaji-chō area across the Katsura River, "Umaji Dainagon azuki," regarded as the finest grade of Tamba Dainagon azuki bean, is grown as a local specialty.
