History
Chiyo Station is a passenger station opened on 30 October 1932 as Chiyo halt, when the Sanshin Railway's Kadoshima–Tenryūkyō section opened. On 1 August 1943 the Sanshin Railway was nationalized as part of the Iida Line and transferred to the Ministry of Railways, and the halt was simultaneously upgraded to a station. It began handling freight on 1 April 1953, becoming a general-service station, but freight handling ended on 20 December 1966, returning it to a passenger-only station. It became a station of JR Central with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. Service between Hiraoka and Tenryūkyō stations was suspended by Typhoon No. 18 in September 2013 and replaced by bus substitution, resuming on 10 October that year. It is a ground-level station with a single side platform serving one track; unstaffed, with no station building, only a waiting shelter on the platform.
Notes
JR Central itself introduces the station as a "secluded station" (hikyō eki) in its own pamphlets and in-train advertisements; although there are houses nearby, the farmland on the Tenryū River side can only be reached by crossing an unauthorized level crossing that has no barriers or warning devices.
