History
Chippubetsu Station opened on 23 November 1910 as a general station named Chikushi Station, with the Railway Board's Rumoi Line opening between Fukagawa and Rumoi stations. Because the written form differed from the local place name "Chippubetsu," problems such as misdirected mail arose, and after prolonged local requests for renaming, the station was renamed Chippubetsu Station on 10 November 1954. The line it belonged to was renamed the Rumoi Main Line in 1931, and in 1997 the kanji used to write that name was revised, both forms being read "Rumoi Main Line." Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1984; operation became unstaffed in 1986; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways; and it became fully unstaffed in 1992. The station continued using its station building, rebuilt in 1971, until it was closed with the abolition of the Fukagawa–Ishikari-Numata section on 1 April 2026.
Notes
On 10 May 2007, about 55 people tried to board a local train bound from Mashike to Fukagawa as it departed this station, but because the train was a single KiHa 54-series diesel railcar with a capacity of 64, 26 passengers could not fit and were left behind; JR Hokkaido subsequently modified the railcar's interior before resuming KiHa 54 operation on the Rumoi Main Line.
