History
Chikusa Station opened on 25 July 1900 with the state-run line between Nagoya and Tajimi, about 400 m toward Nagoya from its current position. Its line was renamed the Chūō West Line in October 1909 and merged into the Chūō Main Line in May 1911. A freight branch to Atsuta operated between 1918 and 1930. The station moved to its present site on 1 September 1961, and in 1962 the stretch through it was elevated and then double-tracked. The adjoining Higashiyama Line subway station opened on 15 June 1960 with the extension from Sakaemachi (now Sakae) to Ikeshita. The JR side passed to JR Central at the 1 April 1987 privatisation, and TOICA was introduced in November 2006.
Notes
On 17 January 2011, ahead of an update to the conventional-line traffic management system, Chikusa and Kanayama were the first stations to receive the new automated platform announcements; on the day itself heavy snow disrupted the timetable and the system's announcement equipment broke down as well, so simplified announcements had to be used instead.
