History

Buzen-Zenkōji Station opened on 25 September 1897 as "Yokkaichi Station," with the opening of the first Hōshū Railway's Yukuhashi–Yanagigaura section. It is located at Ōaza Higashi-Takei, Usa City, Ōita Prefecture, on JR Kyushu's Nippō Main Line. It was acquired by the first Kyushu Railway in 1901 and nationalized in 1907. On 23 May 1914 the Hijū Railway opened a line from this station to Shin-Toyokawa Station, but that line was abolished in its entirety on 1 October 1953 as the Ōita Kōtsū Hōshū Line. The station was renamed "Buzen-Zenkōji Station" on 1 September 1919; a second-generation station building was completed in 1935, and double-tracking was completed to Amatsu Station on 17 September 1982 and to Yanagigaura Station on 21 October the same year. Kyushu Railway Company took over at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987; a third-generation station building was completed on 19 March 2006, and the station became unstaffed on 26 March 2016.

Notes

On 24 April 1919 the Railway Board once announced the renaming of the station from "Yokkaichi" to "Takenogō Station," only to withdraw the announcement a mere month later, on 21 May, before re-announcing the current name on 1 September — an unusual history in which the renaming was left hanging in limbo. The station name derives from the nearby temple "Buzen Zenkōji" (Shibahara Zenkōji).
