History
Biwako Hamaōtsu Station, a stop in Hamaōtsu 1-chōme, Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture, opened on 15 July 1880 as the first "Ōtsu Station" of the government-operated railway. It became a branch-line station with the 1889 opening of the Kotō Line, and in 1913, when the Ōtsu Tramway (later the Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line) opened, passenger service there ended for a time and it became a freight station. It was renamed Hamaōtsu Station that June, and in 1925 the Kōjaku Railway and the Keihan Keishin Line began running through. The Kōjaku Railway and the JNR Hamaōtsu Line were both abolished in 1969, and in 1981, to coincide with the Biwako National Athletic Meet, the Keishin Line and Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line stops were consolidated and rebuilt at their present location. It was renamed "Biwako Hamaōtsu Station" on 17 March 2018. Served by the Keihan Ishiyama-Sakamoto and Keishin Lines, it has an island platform serving two tracks.
Notes
It was selected as one of the "100 Kinki Stations" in the third round of that program.
