History

Bibai Station opened on 5 July 1891 as a general station of the Hokkaido Colliery Railway. The original station building stood about 250 m from the present site, toward Kōshunai, but repeated flooding led to its relocation to the current site on 1 September 1901. It passed to the Government Railway when the Hokkaido Colliery Railway's lines were nationalized in October 1906, and it served as the starting point of Mitsubishi Mining's Bibai Railway Line from 1914 to 1972 and as the junction for the Hakodate Main Line's Minami-Bibai Branch from 1931 to 1973. Freight handling ended in November 1982 and parcel handling in March 1985; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways, and an elevated station building over the tracks came into use on 5 February 2002. All Super White Arrow services began stopping there in March of that year, and the "Kitaca" IC card has been usable since 16 March 2024.

Notes

The station's name is said to derive from an Ainu word related to "pipa-i" (freshwater-pearl-mussel river); the municipality in which the station stood at its opening was named Numakai Village, a translation carrying the same meaning. The municipality did not take the name "Bibai" until 1926, so the station's name had already become established well before then.
