History
Bentenjima Station is a station on the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) Tōkaidō Main Line, located on Benten-jima island in Lake Hamana, at Bentenjima, Maisaka-chō, Chūō-ku, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. It first opened on 11 July 1906 as a station for sea-bathers, but was abolished on 11 September of the same year; it reopened on 15 June 1907 as a provisional halt, a temporary station operating only in summer. On 1 September 1916 it was upgraded to a year-round station and began handling baggage. Baggage handling was discontinued on 1 April 1972, and the station building was rebuilt on 1 May of that year. It passed to JR Central at the division and privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and TOICA became usable from 1 March 2008.
Notes
The station grounds, including the area around the middle of the platform, were treated as imperial estate land until 1899 because of a land dispute between Maisaka-chō and Arai-chō; it was only in 1942, when the Arai-chō side's portion of Bentenjima was incorporated into Maisaka-chō, that the land was unified under a single town for the first time.
