Location

History

Bampaku-kinenkōen Station opened on 24 August 2005 as part of the Tsukuba Express line linking Akihabara in Tokyo with Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, roughly 51.8 km from the Akihabara terminus. Its name, meaning "Expo Memorial Park," refers to a nearby park built on the site of Expo '85; during planning the station was known by the placeholder name Shimana, taken from the local district. The elevated station has two opposed side platforms with the station building beneath them, and is operated as station TX18 by the Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company. It has the fewest boarding passengers of any station on the Tsukuba Express line.

Notes

The plaza in front of the station's east exit holds Tarō Okamoto's sculpture "Looking at the Future," relocated here from the Expo Memorial Park when the station opened; a same-named "Bampaku-kinenkōen Station" in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, on the Osaka Monorail, offers a view of the Tower of the Sun, which Okamoto made for the 1970 Osaka Expo.
