History

Ayukai Station, on the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line in Shirataka, Yamagata, opened on 11 December 1922 when the Nagai Line was extended from Nagai to Ayukai. The station became a contracted-management station on 1 April 1965 and was simplified to unstaffed operation on 19 March 1984. It passed to JR East with the 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways before being transferred to the third-sector Yamagata Railway on 25 October 1988, with the simplified contracted management formally ended on 1 October 1991. The single side platform serves traffic in both directions on the line that runs 27.9 rail kilometres from the southern terminus at Akayu.
